Popular HVAC Myths Debunked
Not everything you hear from your neighbor or friend is true. Even more so, not everything you read on the internet or see in a magazine will be true either. Most people do not know a lot about the heating and air conditioning world, so we are here to help you and debunk a few common HVAC myths. If you have any further questions, call the Air Central of the Carolinas team today located in Indian Trail, North Carolina – we are always happy to help!
1 - A Space Heater Can Save You Money
While a space heater sounds like an excellent idea to keep you warm this fall and winter, they can often times cost you more money than running your furnace. There are times when your electricity costs more than natural gas (what your furnace uses) which means your space heater that is running on electricity can increase your monthly costs instead of decreasing them.
2 - Cover the Outdoor Unit in the Winter
Although you may think you need to cover your outdoor AC unit in the fall and winter to “protect it”, it will actually bring your unit more harm than good. Covering your unit will seal in moisture which will then speed up corrosion of the unit. If you want to winter proof your unit, you can simply place a board over the fan.
3 - Turning Up the Thermostat will Heat Your Home faster
You may think that if you turn up your thermostat to a higher temperature that it will heat up your home quicker. This however is very false. No matter how high or low you program your thermostat, it will take the same amount of time to heat and/or cool your home. Doing this will only increase your monthly energy usage and cost you more money in the long run.
